Okoboji High School is honored to welcome Iowa Supreme Court Justice Edward Mansfield on Tuesday afternoon, September 15. Justice Mansfield will speak to all OHS juniors and seniors from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM about the role of the Iowa Supreme Court, the state’s appellate process, and his experience on the bench, followed by a Q&A session with students.
Appointed to the Iowa Supreme Court in 2011, Justice Mansfield holds degrees from Harvard and Yale Law School. Prior to his current role, he served on the Iowa Court of Appeals and has taught as an adjunct professor of law at Drake University since 1997.
Public Invited to Supreme Court Oral Arguments in Spirit Lake
In addition to the school visit, the Iowa Supreme Court will hold evening oral arguments open to the public on Tuesday, September 15, at 7:00 PM. The proceedings will take place at the SAMI Bedell Center at Spirit Lake High School (2701 Hill Ave., Spirit Lake).
Community members, students, and families are encouraged to attend to observe the appellate process in action. The session will begin with an explanation of court procedures, followed by lawyers presenting arguments in Andrew Perry v. Dordt University. A public reception with the justices will follow immediately after the proceedings.
